Ever wonder what the team says in a huddle? Want to learn football lingo and the basic concepts of BOfense? Want to ask a question about rules but too afraid to ask? Then Football 101, presented by the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center and the Bo Pelini Foundation, might be just right for you!
Approximately 1,000 ladies joined the University of Nebraska Football staff in a day filled with the ultimate personal Husker Football experience. The majority of the proceeds went toward breast cancer research with profits being donated to the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center Foundation and to the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center in Omaha.
This fantastic all-day event took place on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the University of Nebraska Athletic Hawks Championship Center and the Osborne Athletic Complex just North of Memorial Stadium on NU’s beautiful city campus. The Husker football coaching staff took part in this fantastic event and several Husker football players also lent their expert advice.
This year’s Football 101 was even more interactive and engaging than ever before. Coach Osborne, Coach Pelini and every member of Bo's staff participated.
The morning was led by Coach Pelini, who conducted a mock film session with several defensive players watching clips from the 2009 Gator Bowl. The session ended with a lively Q&A time with current Husker players.
The session on the field with the assistant coaches included drills for the offense, defense and special teams. The participants then put their knowledge to the test by "running the play" in the center of the Hawks Field. No major injuries were reported, despite several tackles for loss, fumble recoveries and sacks on the quarterback. (Please note, in 2010 the 18-year-old age limit and signing of release forms will be strictly enforced.)
Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson and Defensive Coordinator Carl Pelini each led their own separate sessions, teaching the ladies about both sides of the ball. Little brother Bo made several attempts to cut Carl's session short and to answer questions for the ladies. Carl showed exclusive footage and kept the ladies at the edge of their seats.
Each group also attended three additional sessions, including an interactive session with the strength coaches and presentations by the athletic medicine, equipment and academic staff. Everyone in attendance got out of their seats and participated in warmups similar to those the Huskers do.
The day concluded with Bo leading the participants in the Tunnel Walk into Memorial Stadium. All breast cancer survivors in attendance were able to take part in a special on-field salute, and were invited to a private reception with Bo following the event's conclusion.
